Here are the top 10 matches not to miss this weekend, starting Friday night, August 29:

1. Valencia vs. Malaga, La Liga:

  • Valencia CF
  • 21:00
    (01:30 IST)
  • Málaga

Spain’s Champions League hopefuls Valencia will play Malaga in their first home match of the season at Sevilla with their coach Nuno in the stands on Friday night.

Malaga has strengthened over the summer with strong players like Guillermo Ochoa, Luis Alberto and Miguel Torres joining the team and they are brimming with confidence after their win last week. Valencia is also strong enough to counter them, if not overtake their stride in this match.

2. Burnley vs. Manchester United, Premier League

  • Burnley
  • 12:45
    (17:15 IST)
  • Manchester United

Burnley are without a point from their first two games, while Manchester United have managed
one but took a severe beating from League One side MK Dons in the Carling Cup during
the week.

Last time Burnley met Manchester United in the season, their Robbie Blake’s goal won them a shocked 1-0 win.

3. Monaco vs. Lille, Ligue 1

Last season’s second and third placed teams Monaco will host Lille this weekend.

Leonardo Jardim’s Monaco have just one win from three so far, with a narrow victory over
Nantes last time. They are still expecting star striker Radamel Falcao to join the club and change the fortunes.

Lille, however, remain unbeaten after three matches and remain strong after Monaco’s
second-season slump. A win in Saturday match will boost the strength of the winner.

4. Schalke 04 vs. Bayern Munich, Bundesliga

Schalke will play Bayern Munich on Matchday 2 in the backdrop of their defeat against Hannover in their opening league game of the season. They were beaten by Dynamo Dresden in the DFB-Pokal the week before, leaving boss Jens Keller hurry for a face-saving strategy to ensure no three consecutive defeats.

Bayern Munich, with their 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg last week, should perform better than what thei did last time, if they want to win the tile again. Worth watching Pep Guardiola’s lead to win challenge of the Champions League this time.

5. Roma vs. Fiorentina, Serie A

Italian football time with Serie A finally kicking off this weekend with the opening match between Roma and Fiorentina, which can be expected to be a fascinating opener for the 2014-15 season.

6. Atlas vs. Santos Laguna, Liga MX

Crossing the Atlantic, we have the Liga MX match of Atlas vs. Santos Laguna playing the early stage of the season. For both of teams, this is the seventh match but for Santos Laguna, whose performance in 2013 Apertura and Clausura campaigns was exciting, a victory can assure them a fourth win though they are still one place and two points behind Atlas currently.

7. Tottenham Hotspur vs. Liverpool, Premier League

  • Tottenham Hotspur
  • 13:30
    (18:00 IST)
  • Liverpool

Back in Europe, the Premier League match on Sunday will see Liverpool take on hosts Tottenham Hotspur. After Liverpool bash of Tottenham, the Spurs boss had been sacked and Mauricio Pochettino is now in charge of Tottenham, and they are top with two wins from two, while Liverpool lost to Manchester City on Monday night.

8. AC Milan vs. Lazio, Serie A

AC Milan’s new manager Pippo Inzaghi is leading the team’s first match and ensure a definite win so the team can sail into crucial battle on Sunday against host Lazio in the Serie A’s opening weekend.

But Milan is still poor judging by their pre-season performances and their summer recruits were not that impressive, either. Lazio, in the last season ended up in ninth place, one point and league spot below Milan, but players like Stefan de Vrij and Marco Parolo should prove their mettle.

9. D.C. United vs. New York RB, MLS

In the Eastern Conference, the weekend clash between the nation’s two most famous teams D.C. United and New York Red Bulls is worth watching this weekend. D.C. are impressive at the top of the Conference, while New York at the fifth spot, just a point ahead of both Philadelphia Union and New England Revolution.

10 Villarreal vs. Barcelona, La Liga

  • Villarreal
  • 18:00
    (22:30 IST)
  • Barcelona

Back in Europe, La Liga will see Barcelona take on Villarreal making the weekend match one of the best. Barcelona defeated last week Elche, 3-0 and this weekend they face Villarreal, who were terrific in beating Levante during the opening weekend. The Villarreal were equally intend to fight after a 2-0 win last time.
