Will Yoga Answer Side Effects of Poor Sleep like Heart Attacks, Strokes?

Recently studies have reiterted that fact that poor sleep disorder may double the risk of heart attacks, while increasing the risk of a stroke by four times. If they are single or less educated, the chances are even more, said researchers.

Heart attack or myocardial infarction is 2 to 2.6 times higher and a stroke risk would transform from 1.5 to 4 times higher, depending upon those who sleep well and those who don’t, says the study from the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Novosibirsk.

Based on a sample of 657 men aged 25 to 64 years with no history of heart attack, stroke or diabetes, the Russian researchers in Novosibirsk, Russia studied them since 1994 using the ‘Jenkins Sleep Scale’ or 7 to 8 hours sleep daily for 14 years. Nearly two-thirds of them who had a heart attack also had a sleeping disorder to associate with it.

strokeValery Gafarov, professor of cardiology at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Novosibirsk, said: “We also found that the rates of heart attack and stroke in men with sleeping disorders were related to the social gradient, with the highest incidences in those who were widowed or divorced, had not finished secondary school, and were engaged in medium to heavy manual labour,” said Gafarov.

Reminding that sleep should not be treated as a trivial issue, he said, “Poor sleep should be considered a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease along with smoking, lack of exercise and poor diet.” Deaths from heart diseases account for about half of the total mortality among the world population, while heart attacks and stroke account for 80 percent of them he said.

Warning about an impending epidemic of cardiovascular diseases, he said intensive prevention of risk factors leading to the development of cardiovascular diseases is a must, said Gafarov while prsenting his findings at a session of the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions (CCNAP) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in Croatia.

With the world observing the International Yoga Day on Sunday, June 21, the focus will be on heart diseases and diabetes, the two main causes of illness among the world population and hopefully, merits of yoga to prevent these risk factors will dominate the world in the near future research.
