Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone shocked fans and followers in the New Year Eve of 2021 deleting all posts from her social media platforms, with Twitter fans at 27.7 million and Instagram followers at 52.5 million.
The actress, who was put through NCB questioning in drug-related scrutiny of the Bollywood actors, took the move to remove all her tweets and Instagram pictures on December 31, making it display none and looking empty. Initially, netizens wondered if Deepika’s social media platforms had been hacked. However, it subsequently came to notice that it was the actress who changed her display images. It is not clear why Deepika took the step of wiping out her social media platforms.
Currently, Deepika has 75 million followers together on Twitter and on Instagram accounts. As she is vacationing with husband, actor Ranveer Singh, in Rajasthan, no clear signal has come whether it was a mere knee-jerk reaction to ward off trolls or due to her health issues.
Deepika faced massive trolls when she supported Rhea Chakraborty after the death of Sushant Rajput on drug charges. She was among many Bollywood actors who were questioned by the Narcotics Control Bureau. Prior to it, she was trolled when she attended a night-vigil meeting in support of JNU students, who were attacked by goons in the middle of night on the campus.
New trend to show disagreement?
However, a vocal supporter of liberal views, Deepika never looked back when it was discussing some pressing mental health issues in the public or criticizing restrictive traditions often unleashed in our society. With her role in Padmavat, she took it upon herself to portray women issues more prominently than others. However, the sudden move to delete all the posts on social media may herald a new trend of expression of disagreement in Indian and global social order.
Deepika will next be seen in Kabir Khan’s “83” where Ranveer plays former World Cup-winning captain of the Indian cricket team, Kapil Dev. Deepika plays Kapil’s wife Romi Dev. She will also be seen in Shakun Batra’s yet-untitled next, which also stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Panday.
