WHO too responsible for sterilization deaths: Brinda Karat

Moving beyond the confines of doctors, government behind it, CPI-M leader Brinda Karat on Wednesday went on to criticize the World Health Organisation (WHO) that funded the program for the botched up sterilizations in Chhattisgarh, conducted by the state government.

"Sterilization programme in Chhattisgarh was being funded by the WHO and it needs to be questioned where the money was being spent," Karat said.

"Why doesn’t WHO ask for the audit report from the government about the manner in which fund was being spent. It has the right to know whether the standard of hygiene was being maintained, " Karat added.

She was accompanied by other women activists who demanded the resignation of the Chhattisgarh health minister. In all, 13 women died and many hospitalized due to the botched up sterilizations conducted at a government-run camp in Chhattisgarh.(IANS)
