With minus marking, out of the total of 400 marks, this year’s cut off point is expected to be lower at around 235 (241 in 2013) as UPSC has decided not calculate English comprehension marks for the total in 2014 but more than 1.25 lakh additional candidates took the exam this year.
Since the CS Prelims 2014 had 12 questions on English comprehension in 2014, the cut off point should be lower in 2014 by at least 5 to 10 marks compared to last year’s cut off, which was 241. In all 4.5 lakh candidates appeared for the Prelims this year compared to last year’s 3.25 lakh candidates.
Accordingly, for OBC, the cut off point will be around 212 (222 in 2013), for Scheduled Caste candidates it would around 195 (207 in 2013) and for Scheduled Tribe candidates, it is expected this year at around 190 (201 in 2013).
For PH-1, PH-2 and PH-3, it will be less than 10 marks of 2013 cutoff points which were 199, 184 and 163 respectively.
CSAT 2014 was conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) after much rancour on August 24, allowing candidates to attempt questions on English comprehension but not adding them to the total. Moreover, the delay in conducting the exam was due to the elections in May, which otherwise is the usual time it conducts the exam for the coveted All India Services.
The total number of candidates who have applied was 944,926 but only 680,455 downloaded the admit card and finally the number dwindled down to 450,000 who took the exam. Last year, 14,959 candidates were selected for the Mains and 3,003 were called for the final Personality Test and 1,222 were selected.
Once the results are announced, the schedule for Civil Services Mains 2014 will begin. The second phase of selection consists of the Civil Services Mains 2014 which is a written examination.
