TRAI Tribunal Rejects Plea to Stop Jio Free Offers

TRAI Appellate Tribual (TDSAT) has refused to issue a stay on the Reliance Jio Free welcome offer and other offers in the pipeline though it becomes paid service from April 1, 2017.

TDSAT, the Telecom Dispute resolution body has asked Jio to revise the limitations for free offers in view of the free services offered in the past six months as Free or Welcome offer. Reliance Jio has succeeded to get 100 million subscribers in 170 days, giving a tough time for established players to survive in a highly competitive environment.

TDSAT has refused to stay even the new offer by Jio indirectly for those who download Jio Money and pay for Rs.303 plan. Airtel and Idea cellular were among the petitioners demanding the tribunal to stop Jio’s juggernaut with free offers.

Idea Cellular has raised a question over the free offer by Jio for more than 90 days and yet TRAI did not take action to which TRAI said the approveal was given after the difference between the two free offers — Welcome Offer and Happy New Year offer — was made clear.

Now that Jio has become a paid service with effect from April 1, 2017, other incentives are on for those who subscribe to Jio Money. By downloading the My Jio App, the subscriber can pay Rs.303 for Reliance Jio plan and avail Rs.50 discount with the coupon sent on app.It started from March 15, 2017.
