The latest film “The Shaukeens” by Akshay Kumar with three oggling sectagenarians in Mauritius with Lisa Haydon was able to cross Rs. 5 crore in box office collections on the first day, ranking it in the mid-range films with decent earnings, while Shahrukh Khan’s “Happy New Year” is still struggling at Rs.194 crore.
Besides Akshay Kumar, who plays narrator in the film, “The Shaukeens” features Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra and Anupam Kher as three Delhi-based businessmen in their 60s looking out for fun and sex in Maritius and Lisa Haydon in their beighbourhood hotel room entices them to the nude beaches.
A remake of Basu Chatterjee’s “Shaukeen” released in the 1908s, the film was brushed aside as another half-baked comedy with no resemblance of the yesteryear comedies but nonetheless, the movie was able to pick up in the evening on Friday, with expectations that it would make inroads this weekend to make better earnings.
Meanwhile, Shahrukh Khan’s “Happy New Year” running into its third week was able to touch Rs.194.50 crore as of its 15th Day, proving critics that the film is struggling to cross Rs.200 crore despite an awesome first day figure of Rs.44.9 crore surpassing all the expections.
According to Koimoi, the movie had done good business in the overseas market but the film has belied the expectations that it would cross Rs.300 crore and join the so-called Rs.500-crore club, as aspired by SRK.
