Tax Exemption for ‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’ Opposed in AP, Telangana

Critics and leaders of several Telangana associations have come out openly condemning the tax exemption given to Nandamuri Balakrishna’s 100th film ‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’ projecting it as a historical film.

The movie, based on history of the Satavahana dynasty founder and emperor, considered first among the Andhra or Telugu rulers in the region. The location of the film was also at the ancient capital of Satavahanas in Kotilingala on the banks of the Godavari river in Karimnagar district, Telangana.

On Balakrishna’s request, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao has exempted the film from tax under section 8 of Andhra Pradesh Entertainment Tax Act, 1939 as well as Rule 33, 34 and 35 of AP Entertainment Tax Rules, 1939, which was followed the next day by Balakrishna’s brother-in-law and AP Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu.

The move by the Chief Ministers of both the state Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to issue a government order waiving off Entertainment Tax for the film ‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’ projecting it as a historical film is politically motivated and not based on authentic historical evidence, the critics said.

"In fact this film is made of a complete fictional and purely entertaining commercial film, only to make money. Even the history has also been diverted in its narration and politically motivated," said three organisations which came together to oppose the film.

The representatives of Telangana Democratic & Secular Alliance, Voice of Telangana and 1969 Telangana Udyamakarula Samakya have said that they approach the state high court to restrain the governments from offering the tax waiver to the film.

Balakrishna’s film "Gautamiputra satakarni" was released on Friday amid fanfare and already Advocate P V Krishnaiah had filed a PIL on behalf of CB Adarsh Kumar, in Hyderabad High Court and was directed to a regular bench but the bench refused to take the petition due to Sankranti vacation for the court. The film was released on Thursday.
