Shruti Seth writes open letter after Twitter rage on #SelfieWithDaughter remark

Actress Shruti Seth, who was trolled on Twitter and called everything right from ‘prostitute’ to a ‘b**ch’ has responded with an open letter to the criticism.

Shruti, who tried to point out the other viewpoint on Prime Minister’s initiative #SelfiWithDaughter and was trolled for about 48 hours constantly on Twitter. The actress instead of posting a selfie with her daughter, said the initiative is not sufficient. Faced with intense hatred online, she initially deleted all her tweets but following Thursday she wrote an open letter to the entire nation, bringing her deleted tweets.

She said she was not alone in getting abused but the abuse was targeted at “her, her family, her ‘Muslim’ husband, her 11 month old daughter” and her dwindling career as an actor.

“Men and women alike said the most vile things about me, stripping me of all my dignity as someone’s daughter, wife and mother and most importantly a woman,” she wrote.

“Men who were busy hash-tagging their selfies with their daughters one minute called me slanderous names the next. Asked me if I knew who my real father was. Questioned if I had been sexually abused as a child and hence was opposed to the idea of a selfie with my father,” she said.

At the end of the letter, she reiterated her original tweet and said PM Modi’s initiative will not be sufficient to bring sea change in the country. Her original Tweet aimed at PM’s initiative reads: “Selfies don’t bring about change, reform does. So please try and be bigger than a photograph. Come on!”
