After the controversial ban on sale of meat in Mumbai and some other state during the Jain festival of Paryushan began yesterday. To mark respect for the Jain community, 10, 13, 17 and 18 September, the government has enforced the ban on sale of mutton and chicken.
Digambar Jains refer the festival as Das Lakshana. The Ten days long festival is celebrated widely by the Jains. It is the time when the laity and the followers take on vows of study of scriptures, fasting and forgiving one another.
During this spiritual festival, the followers of Jainism are reminded by the monks through discourses to follow the ten-fold path of forbearance, compassion, uprightness, truth, purity, restraint, austerity, renunciation, lack of possession and chastity.
The word “Paryushan” has several different meanings:
Pari + ushan = all kinds + to burn = to burn (shed) our all types of karmas. To shed our karmas, we do twelve different types of austerities including fasting.
Another meaning of “ushan” is to stay closer. To stay closer to our own soul from all directions and to stay absorbed in our own-self (soul), we do Svadhyaya5 (self-study), meditation, austerities, etc.
Pari + upshamana = upshamana means to suppress, to suppress our passions (kashayas – anger, ego, deceit and greed) from all directions.
