PM congratulates Sundar Pichai, new Google CEO

sundarIndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated IIT-Kanpur alumnus Sundar Pichai on being appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Google Inc.

“Congratulations Sundar Pichai. My best wishes for the new role at Google,” the Prime Minister said.


Born in Chennai in 1972, Pichai did his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur)in Metallurgical Engineering and joined M.S. at Stanford University in Material Sciences and Engineering and then did his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

He was with McKinsey before joining Google in 2004, where he led the product management and innovation efforts for a suite of Google’s client software products, including Google Chromeand Chrome OS, as well as being largely responsible for Google Drive.

He went on to oversee the development of different apps like Gmail and Google Maps and in 2013 he was given Android too from Andy Rubin. He was rumored to be one of the contenders for the CEO position of Microsoft in 2014.

The elevation of Sundar Pichai foresees major role for Indian honchos in the IT sector as both Microsoft and Google have opted for Indians. Satya Nadella of Microsoft was the first ever CEO of a major IT company and now Sundar Pichai is the second, while many Indians head upcoming IT companies in the US and elsewhere in the world.
