Bihar and Himachal Pradesh will have new governors. Ram Nath Kovind was appointed Bihar governor by President Pranab Mukherjee and Acharya Dev Vrat has been appointed to be governor of Himachal Pradesh, as per a communique issued by the Rashtrapathi Bhavan.
“The above appointments will take effect from the dates the incumbents assume charge of their respective offices,” said the statement.
Ram Nath Kovind, an advocate and BJP spokesman, is a Dalit leader from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. As a BJP member since 1991, he served two terms as a Rajya Sabha MP from 1994-2000 and 2000-2006.
He is former President of the BJP Dalit Morcha and President of the All-India Koli Samaj.
Gurukul principal from Kurukshetra, Acharya Dev Vrat (56), is considered a close follower of yoga guru Ramdev. He is closely associated with campaigns against female foeticide. The governor’s office in HP has been vacant since January after the completion of Urmila Singh’s term.
As governor of Himachal Pradesh, he said, “Good gurukuls would be opened in Himachal so that the future generation could learn Indian culture and feel honored.”
