Despite bad reviews by majority of publications and cine-websites, Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer “MS Dhoni: The Untold Story” has broken records with box office collections on opening day touching Rs.21.30 crore, second only to Salman Khan’s “Sultan” in 2016 so far.

Another record that the film created was that it surpassed Shahrukh Khan film “Fan” collections on the opening day. Here is the list of top 5 hit films of Hindi this year and their box office collections.

  1. Salman Khan’s “Sultan” — Rs.36.54 cr
  2. Sushant Rajput’s “MSDhoni: TheUntoldStory” — Rs.21.30 cr
  3. Shahrukh Khan’s “Fan” — Rs.19.20 cr
  4. Akshay Kumar’s “Housefull 3” — Rs.15.21 cr
  5. Akshay Kumar’s “Rustom” — Rs.14.11 cr

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh described the performance of MSDhoni film as fabulous and tweeted saying: “#MSDhoni TheUntoldStory takes a THUNDEROUS start on Day 1… Emerges the 2nd HIGHEST OPENER of 2016… Fri ₹ 21.30 cr. India biz. #MSDhoniTheUntoldStory is the BIGGEST OPENER in the biopic genre… Sat and Sun biz should add to a FABULOUS total. India biz.”

The film based on Indian cricketer MS Dhoni’s life was produced partly by him and it was destined from the beginning as a big winner of audience, especially MS Dhoni fans. The morning show on Friday was packed in all multiplexes and theatres in major cities.
