Modi in Varanasi: Cleans Assi Ghat,Spreads Cleanliness Drive

In his maiden visit to Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi brings cleanliness drive to his Lok Sabha Constituency, nominating nine persons including Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, crickters Suresh Raina and Mohammad Kaif, and singer Kailash Kher, to support and carry forward the message to clean India.

Modi visited Varanasi for the first time after being the Prime Minister. During the second day of his visit, Modi arrived at the Assi ghats. Being prayed at the ghat and after a ‘Ganga Puja’ with chanting of hymns, Modi cleaned an area on the river bank, removing silt and dirt accumulated there. Modi cleaned a part of the river as part of the Nirmal Ganga Mission.

Modi said, "I have started the cleanliness drive here and the social organisations have assured me that this entire ‘ghat’ will be cleaned within a month."

According to IANS, Modi said he had earlier nominated nine people as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a mission he launched October 2 on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Many local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers have joined the PM later. On Saturday, Modi said he has nominated nine more people to take the mission to clean India forward.

The other people who were tagged by Modi includes Chancellor of Chitrakoot Specially Abled University Ram Bhadracharya, Bhojpuri singer and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, Manu Sharma known for his ‘Krishna Atma Katha’, Padmashri Sanskrit scholar Devi Prasad Dwivedi and comedian Raju Srivastava.

Meanwhile, BJP MP and actress Hema Malini has launched a mass cleanliness campaign in Varanasi on Saturday.

However, Modi has reportedly called students and people to take up the cleanliness drive asking them to commit them for the drive.

Modi has reached Varanasi on Friday on a two-day visit where he mentioned some of his vision on renewal and development of his constituency.

As part of developing and promoting handloom products of Varanasi, Modi reached Bada Lalpur and laid foundation stone of the Trade Facilitation Centre and Crafts Museum on Friday. It was declared during the first general budget presented by his government in June 2014, which aims at the uplift of the weavers of Varanasi.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said Varanasi has a special place in his heart. Depicting himself as a servant, Modi said, "I am in Varanasi as your servant. I will be with you in times of happiness and sadness."

During his visit, Modi has adopted Jayapur village as part of his ‘Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana’ (MPs’ Model Village Scheme).

However, after his cleanliness drive message, Modi is reportedly left to visit the ashram of Mata Anandmayi.
