The Modi government is all set to kick-start activities to celebrate India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary this year, after a day Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma has said they have not invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi but only “Those who truly believe in democracy and the ideals of Nehru,” for the international conference organised by the party to mark Nehru’s day.
PM Modi has declared that the activities to be initiated on the day will ‘connect’ Nehru with the people. According to reports, Modi has said in a committee meeting held in the beginning of the month, “Whatever we do, it should be something that helps in connecting Nehru with the masses.”
Amid, when asked if Modi was invited for the conference, Shah has said, "We have not given any invitation to the Prime Minister. We have invited all those who truly believe in democracy and the ideals of Nehru." Sharma has accused Modi and BJP of trying to appropriate legacy freedom fighters belonging to the Congress "without subscribing to their values". He has claimed, "This government, beginning from the Prime Minister to others, is trying to usurp the legacy of leaders of our freedom movement and our leaders without subscribing to their views."
However, recalling Nehru’s love towards children, Modi government has organised to launch the nationwide cleanliness drive to schools in the name of “Bal Swachhta Mission.” The launch of the campaign will mark celebration of Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary as well as Children’s day.
Modi has also looked into Nehru’s aims and efforts of developing science and technology as well as building scientific institutions in the country. As per reports, Modi has also said that programmes would be launched to spread scientific temper amongst people as a tribute to Nehru.
Meanwhile, some of the decisions that had been reportedly taken and approved by the early committee during the UPA rule have also discussed in the meeting with Modi. They are, as per reports, a website for launched for Nehru, which will be hosted and managed by the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), Rs 10 crore grant for the uplift and upgradation of the same and creation of a grant for scholars engaging in research on Nehru.
A day ago, amid the tussle between BJP and Congress regarding Nehru’s legacy, Congress has criticised the Modi government, alleging that the party had ignored late PM Indira Gandhi’s martyrdom day while it celebrated Sardar Vallavbhai Patel’s birthday on October 31.
However, in the absence of Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to kick-start the 125th anniversary from Nehru’s birthday.
According to reports, 55 world leaders are invited for the international conference organised by the Congress, in which party President Sonia Gandhi will chair the conference whereas vice president Rahul Gandhi will lead the party delegation. The conference will be held at Vigyan Bhavan from November 17. Meanwhile, Congress is reportedly getting prepared for the campaign of Delhi Assembly elections on Thursday, on the occasion of Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary.
