Manchester City vs Sunderland Match Preview, Prediction, Form, Players to Watch

Manchester City vs Sunderland
Venue – Etihad stadium
Date –1st January 2014
Time – 8:30 PM IST

A complacent Manchester City side surrendered a two goal advantage against lowly side Burnley and dropped two points last week in the Premier League which may have actually affected their title race. In what was expected to be a ‘goals galore’ fixture, City were unexpectedly subdued for most parts. This might just be what Sunderland boss Gus Poyet will look to target come new year’s eve. The only positive for City will perhaps be the fact that both Chelsea and United too dropped points as well.

This leaves no changes in the top three slots and the battle might once again be decided by the side with the better mental temperament. City will surely make amends this week and Sunderland might just bear the brunt of the offense.

A win against Newcastle did a world of good for Sunderland both physically and mentally. But they have nothing to show beyond that fixture. A demoralizing home defeat to Hull and a goalless draw against Villa leaves them in the 14th place, only 4 points above the relegation zone. With more than halfway done in the season, Sunderland might just take the position they are currently in. But any of the bottom sides picking up wins will put them in jeopardy and Poyet will look to adapt a safety first approach. A point against City will feel like Goldust for them and that will be their agenda heading into the Etihad fixture.

Key factors in the match:
City will once again be without Aguero, Dzeko and Kompany owing to long term injuries. This has been an issue that continues to plague them and Pellegrini has made certain makeshift options to contain the issue. He will once again bank on David Silva to deliver and the little Spaniard will be more than happy to please his boss. His midfield runs have been hard to spot and he might turn out to be the difference maker between the two sides.
