Indian tennis player Leander Paes has brought acclaim again when he received the 17th Grand Slam in the US Open mixed doubles with Swiss partner Martina Hingis and all eyes are on the Women’s Mixed test tomorrow in which Martina and another Indian player Sania Mirza will enter the court.
Seeded fourth, the Indo-Swiss pair defeated unseeded Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 in a final that lasted for one hour and seventeen minutes.
Paes, 42, has become the first man to pocket nine mixed doubles title, surpassing his erstwhile doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi, who has eight titles to his credit. Paes has so far 17 Grand Slam records 8 in men’s doubles and 9 in mixed doubles.
This the thrid time they were lucky after their win over Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic in the Australian Open final and another defeat of Alexander Peya and Timea Babos in the Wimbledon title match.
Paes told the US Open official website after the match:”One thing I do have is the guts. I will go for it. My whole life is about perseverance, just trying to find a way to succeed.”
Hingis, 34, was equally happy about her match partner. “I have never had a partner as thoughtful of me, backing me up, as Leander. It’s amazing the understanding we have for the game, like for each other, how we cover the court at the net, baseline, whatever works. Even one thing doesn’t work we come with plan B or C like it was today,” she said.
Hingis will play women’s doubles final tomorrow with another Indian player Sania Mirza.
