Amid threats of terrorism in India over the so-called intrusion of 10 terrorists targeting Indian cities, Pakistan cricket team has flatly refused to play in Dharmasala, which is nearer border with Pakistan. Finally, BCCI and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have decided to host the historic match between India and Pakistan, a sure energy-surging match, in Kolkata instead of Dharamsala.
The Twenty 20 World Cup between India and Pakistan will be held on March 19 but the venue shift will be confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a few days. However, a BCCI official told media that the event may even get postponed and will be rescheduled.
“Yes Eden Gardens is likely to host the India-Pakistan match on the 19th. One of the reason’s being Eden has not got any match with India playing in it and then Pakistan will be staying in Kolkata. So Eden can be a likely venue,” reported IANS quoting a BCCI official.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police said it would provide the necessary security to all the teams staying in case of a venue shift. “For every team we will be able to provide the security needed,” said Deputy Commissioner headquarters Suprotim Sarkar.
Since Mumbai is the hotbed of Shiv Sena protests against PCB, it may be Kolkata that will surely get an opportunity to host the match between India and Pakistan.
Otherwise, Pakistan cricket team will be flying to Kolkata today for two warm-up games to be played on March 12 and another against Sri Lanka on March 14, besides one in the main round against “To be decided” opponent on March 16.
The match with India was scheduled in Dharamsala on March 17, but there is every chance that it may be held in Kolkata to keep the Pakistani team in Kolkata itself.
