Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir were the pillars on which KKR built their journey to the IPL 2014 title. The former in particular was an embodiment of consistency and impressed with the manner in which he accumulated the runs. In Jacques Kallis, they have a man for all seasons; the South African all rounder can seamlessly slot in wherever he is required in the batting order, and his medium-pace bowling is sure to make run-scoring a difficult task on the sluggish sub-continental pitches.

On the bowling front, the four overs of Sunil Narine will be crucial as always. The mystery spinner from Trinidad has established a reputation such that teams these days tend to come into the match with a defensive mindset and focus on not giving him any wickets. As his bowling numbers – economy 5.46 and strike-rate 17.90 – illustrate, he strangles the opposition and picks up wickets almost every time he is thrown the ball.

The one consistent character in Chennai Super Kings’ successful run over the years has been Suresh Raina. Apart from contributing runs with the bat and controlling the tempo of the match from his one-drop position, rolling his arm over, saving runs in the outfield and pulling off stunning catches, the 27-year old is very infectious in that he brings a lot of positive energy to the team.

MS Dhoni is an important cog in the CSK scheme of things, not only because he is a very destructive batsman, but because as captain he invariably tends to be a couple of steps ahead of the game. The return of Dwayne Bravo, who missed almost the entire IPL season because of a shoulder injury he sustained in the team’s opening match, is certain to lend balance to CSK’s line-up.

Previous Meetings

The Chennai Super Kings have a nearly 65% success record in matches against the Kolkata Knight Riders. The men in yellow have won 9 of the 14 matches between the two teams.

Both teams registered one win-a-piece when they clashed in the IPL earlier this season. While CSK won their home match at Ranchi, KKR retained their home match when they chased down 155 convincingly.

The Chennai Super Kings have won more T20 matches than any other team around the world. The men in the yellow jersey have won 80 of their 134 matches.

This match will feature two of the most experienced captains where T20 cricket is concerned. MS Dhoni is the most experienced captain in the format having been skipper in 180 matches, while the Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir is the second-most experienced captain in the format having been skipper in 96 T20 matches.

Suresh Raina has appeared in each and every one of Chennai Super Kings’ 134 matches. All four IPL 2014 matches played at the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad were won by the team chasing.

KKR will be back in action next on Sunday, September 21, while Chennai Super Kings clash with the Dolphins on Monday, September 22.

Prediction: Chennai Super Kings are the favourites unless KKR gets cheered by Shah Rukh Khan at the Stadium pushing them for the win like Abhishek Bachchan in Pro Kabaddi series.
