ISRO to Launch Heaviest Payload of 5 UK Satellites on PSLV C-28 on July 10

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has mounted five British satellites on its workhorse launch vehicle PSLV C-28, which is ready for launch on July 10 from Sriharikota. (See Photos)

The five satellites include three optical satellites of Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) of UK weigh 447-kg each and one micro-satellite and another nano satellite, weighing a total of 1,440-kg, the heaviest so far for a commercial launch by ISRO.

To mount these heavy satellites onto the launcher, a circular Launcher adapter called as L-adaptor and a triangular deck called Multiple Satellite Adapter-Version 2 (MSA-V2), have been exclusively designed by ISRO.

ISRO said that the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) will lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre using XL version of PSLV for the ninth time and it is the 13th flight of the PSLV.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-28 will loft off the three identical DMC3 satellites into a 647 km Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO) using the high-end version of PSLV in ‘XL’ configuration and the other two auxiliary satellites are also from UK, CBNT-1, a technology demonstrator atellite built by SSTL, and De-OrbitSail, a demo nano satellite built by Surrey Space Centre.

ISRO’s commercial arm Antrix and DMC International Imaging (DMCii), a wholly owned subsidiary of SSTL, UK have entered into an agreement to launch the heavy payload on board the PSLV C-28 and the mounting of the three DMC3 satellites each with a height of about 3 metre has been almost completed, said ISRO officials.

“To mount these satellites onto the launcher, a circular Launcher adaptor called as L-adaptor and a triangular deck called Multiple Satellite Adapter-Version 2 (MSA-V2), were newly designed and realized by ISRO for this specific purpose,” it said.
