Iron-ore probe: CBI raids Janardhana Reddy’s associates in Sandur near Bellary

CBI has focused on Hospet-based iron ore exporters who were close associates of Bellary mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy and his family, as part of the probe into illegal iron ore exports during the 2009-2010 period as directed by the apex court.

Teams of the CBI raided houses of Karapudi Mahesh, Swastik Nagaraj and Somasekhar in Sandur taluk near Hospet on Saturday morning. Janardhana
Reddy is in jail facing charges. An FIR has been registered on the illegal export of iron ore from Belikeri port in Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka, which was Raids are being conducted in Sandur Taluk of mine-rich Bellary district also, they said. Some of the firms searched today include ILC industries, Dream Logistics, SB Logistics , Sri Malikaarjuna Shipping, Greentex Industries.

The probe is investing into the allegations that the iron-ore was exported from the Belekeri Port from January 1, 2009 to May 31, 2010 illegally to China and Pakistan.

The Supreme Court had appointed a Central Empowered Committee(CEC), which recommended the probe to find out officials responsible for violation of rules in allowing 3.8 million tonnes of ore in excess of the government-sanctioned 5 million tonnes.
