Kings XI Punjab, known for their unprecedented run rate of 0.04 in almost every match, have stunned the opponents throughout the season and they are now proven all-out attackers in any match from the start.
Openers Manan Vohra and Virender Sehwag have excelled in the art of going after every ball and startling the bowlers from the word go, while Glenn Maxwell has inflicted scars on bowlers like no other batsman. Except for some low scores in the last 3 matches, KXIP did well on batting front. David Miller is one player who has the game to play second-fiddle and turn on the heat whenever required.
On the bowling front, the KXIP’s attack was mainly handled by Sandeep Sharma and Mitchell Johnson but they need to buck up a little on Tuesday to win the match. Otherwise, Yusuf Pathan will be under close scrutiny today after his exploits in the previous match. The 31-year-old scored the fastest half-century in the IPL – off 15 balls, virtually running away with the win solely.
KKR have openers like Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa with the understanding that one of them remain on the crease for longer time to pave the way for the middle order batsmen to score sixers and boundaries. Uthappa in particular has been an epitome of consistency playing cross-batted shots and reaping the rewards of playing orthodox cricket.
On the bowling front, Sunil Narine and Morne Morkel will play the crucial part to fetch a win or not for the team.
The Kolkata Knight Riders have won 7 of their 13 previous meetings with Kings XI Punjab. On Eden Garden in Kolkata, the home team have won 3 out of their 5 matches against KXIP.
Kings XI Punjab have a 100 percent run record in chasing runs in Pepsi IPL 2014 and they have won each one of their 6 run-chases. Kolkata Knight Riders have also a viable record of winning their last six run-chases.
KKR’s Uthappa, with 516 runs, stands on top with 151 runs more than the second-highest run-getter in the India-leg of Pepsi IPL 2014. His season aggregate of 613 runs is the highest by any of the Kolkata Knight Riders player in the IPL. Even Gautam Gambhir held the record next to him with 590 runs in 2012.
The result of this match will send the winner to the Final, scheduled to be played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on June 1.
The loser will travel to Mumbai, where they will meet the winner of the Eliminator (contested between the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians) on May 30.
Prediction: KXIP may win as they are now setting their eyes firmly on finals and this is one match that they can’t afford to be relaxed.
