The Indian Air Force is Celebrating its 83rd Air Force Day with air display and Parade at the Hindon air base near Delhi today and the major announcement made by IAF chief Arup Raha was that Indian Air force will have women fighter pilots very soon.

Air Chief Marshal Raha said, “We have women pilots flying transport aircraft and helicopters. We are now planning to induct them into the fighter stream to meet the aspirations of young women of India.”

India till now has not allowed women officers to have any combat role, but confined them to flying transport aircraft and helicopters in the force. The world’s fourth largest air force has 750-odd women among more than 10,000 officers serving in the IAF.

In the US Airforce, women have flown combat mission over Afghanistan and Iraq, while Pakistan has got its first batch of women pilots way back in 2006.
