Malayalam film Premam faces piracy allegations.

Hit movie ‘Premam’ in piracy trouble, studio in Chennai raided

The  producer and Director of hit Malayalam film “Premam” were summoned by the Anti-Piracy cell regarding the issue of piracy of the movie.

An Anti-piracy official was quoted to have said that the employees of the Chennai based studio will be questioned. The Chennai studio is run by Bollywood filmmaker, Priyadarshan. PTI quoted an official saying,“We have directed the movie’s producer, director and assistant director to appear for questioning. The officials in the Chennai studio of Priyadarshan will also be quizzed.”

The cell has also carried out series of raids earlier and the officials of the Censor Board and staffers of Aries Vismaya Max Studio were questioned over the matter. A team of anti-piracy officials would soon go to Chennai and collect evidences from Priyadarshan’s studio, he added.

There were reports that the pirated copy of the movie has been allegedly leaked from the studio, which was responsible for the Dolby mixing of the movie ‘Premam.’ Even, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is expected to probe the matter.

The Malyalam movie ‘Premam’ is a story about a protagonist George, whose three phases of love life is portrayed by actor Nivin Pauly. The movie was set to cross all the collection records in Malyalam film industry but the news of leakage of its pirated version has stumbled it heavily, soon after the release.

Due to the alleged lack of support on the issue of piracy, producer of the movie has been asked to resign from various film associations, while the producer said the pirated version had the water mark of censor copy.

“The censor copies had been given to studios here and Chennai, where post production works of the film were held,” he was quoted by PTI.

The “Premam” team has been supported by various film personalities that include actors and directors.

Expressing solidarity, Superstar Mammootty wrote in his Facebook page:

So far nine persons have been arrested from various parts of the state, in connection with the downloading of the pirated CD from different places. Most of them are youngsters and cases have been registered under the Copyright Act.

Stop Piracy! You don’t want us to steal ideas, don’t steal our films! Give every film it’s due ! I support Anwar and Team Premam. Good luck to Nivin and Alphonse and everyone from Premam

The Malayalam movie ‘Premam’ is a coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama written, edited, and directed by Alphonse Putharen. It is produced by the banner Anwar Rasheed Entertainment, which is owned by Anwar Rasheed. The cast includes Nivin Pauly, Madonna Sebastian, Sai Pallavi, and Anupama Parameshwaran in lead roles.

The film was released on 29 May 2015. With all the positive reviews, the film went on to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2015. The movie’s total box office collections grossed over Rs.20 crore in 14 days that too only from Kerala.

Similarly, in 2013, a Telugu film by famous star Pawan Kalyan was leaked online causing uproar in the Telugu film industry, that too prior to the release of the film. The film had beaten all box office records but the episode has left a bad precedent in the film industry over the leak of films in Internet and poor anti-piracy safeguards in the country.
