‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’, the 100 th film in Nandamuri Balakrishna’s film career has hit the bull’s eye with the opening day’s collections reaching Rs.20 crore and several theatres and malls reporting full sales of tickets.
Though released a day after Chiranjeevi’s ‘Khaidi No 150’ that earned more than Rs.40.81 crore on its opening day. it was able to crack it half-way and is likely to dent the megastar’s comeback 150th film after a gap of 10 years.
In overseas markets, the film grossed $357,000 from 117 screens released abroad. It is also billed to be the career best earnings for Balakrishna, aged 56 and had a solid 40-year career behind him.
The film ‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’ is a biopic of 2nd century ruler in Andhra and Telangana region with the capital on the banks of Godavari in Karimnagar district. The film received tax exemption from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the Telugu speaking states.
A dream project of director Jagarlamudi Krish, the film has several war sequences a-la Bahubali and the lead female roles have been played by Hema Malini and Shriya. The movie was made with a whopping Rs. 70 crore and the rights were bought for Rs.46.8 crore already.
With the weekend fully booked for the film, ‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’ is likely to cross Rs.100 crore, creating another yardstick for epic films which are making serious come back in the film industry including the Bahubali series. The film will remain a talk until the Bahubali 2 hits screens in May.
