Ganesh Chaturthi: Tradition bars seeing the moon today

India is gearing up for week-long Ganesh Chaturthi beginning Wednesday, while the tradition warns devotees not to see the moon on this particular day. Here is the anecdote about the tradition:

Lord Ganesh was happy at the end of the celebrations and was on his way home but seeing his stature after consuming lots of food and sweets, the moon above laughed at him attracting Lord Ganesh’s curse that anybody who sees the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi would face wrong accusations and become the target of disbelief. The day epic Mahabharata reiterated when Lord Krishna himself became the victim.

Lord Krishna accidentally sees the reflection of the moon in milk he was drinking on Ganesh Chaturthi day and was beset with similar allegations and had to fight a war to come out clean. So, goes the tradition to avoid seeing the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi day.
