France vs. Germany Quarterfinal: Preview, Prediction, Betting Odds

frranceFrance vs. Germany; Venue – Estádio Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro; Date – 4th July 2014; Time – 9:30 pm IST;

In a mouth watering quarter final clash, former world champions and giants of European football Germany and France battle it out for a spot in the semi final. Both sides have fared very similarly in the tournament with some dominant group stage performances and anything but dominant pre quarters. This time however, they can’t afford to get complacent as there is more at stake than one can imagine.

Germany has always been a ‘key contender’ in the world cup and this year has been no different. The Bavarian giants expectedly topped the group stages and were placed in a relatively easier pre quarters line up against lowly side Algeria. However, it took the Germans more than 120 minutes to break the deadlock and secure a spot in the next round as they were clearly taken by surprise owing to the Algerian resistance. Jaochim Low will clearly be undone by his side’s performance and will expect them to up the ante against France.

With some memorable big margin wins in the group stages, France was expected to ease past Nigeria in the super 8’s. However, it was the super eagles who clearly dominated the match for almost three quarters of the game. France were clearly outplayed by the Africans and looked to be on the brink of exit before the temperamental Paul Pogba broke the deadlock to save their blushes. The score line read 2-0 no doubt, but the true picture was anything but that. France were very poor in attack and they can’t afford to play similarly against the Germans.

Key factors in the match:

Manuel Neuer played the role of a sweeper in the match against Algeria much to everyone’s surprise. The Bayern goalkeeper was called into evasive action on multiple occasions to keep the Algerians at bay and they can’t afford this against France.

When the collective line of Benzema, Cabaye and Valbuena failed, Pogba stepped up to the mark and delivered. The former Manchester United midfielder kept knocking on the Nigerian door before landing the goal and he will be the man the Germans need to silence.

With 3 wins and draw apiece, both sides are pretty much on similar grounds. They were equally tested in their pre quarters and can’t afford to get complacent henceforth.

Germany false no 9 Thomas Muller already has 4 goals to his name and will look to add more to his tally. He had a lackluster game against Algeria will look to put it behind him.

* The last 3 previous meetings between the two sides have featured 17 goals. So, expect a goal fest this time out.

* Germany beat France 2-1 the last time the sides faced off in February 2013.

* Germany are unbeaten in 15 international fixtures. They have won 10 and drawn 5 of those games.

* France have hit the woodwork 6 times in Brazil. The highest by a team in the tournament so far.
