Dakshina Kannada DC Proposes NGO-backed Society to Help Endosulfan Victims

Amid reports of endosulfan victims being neglected in the district of Dakshina Kannada, the district authorities have decided to set up a society to manage the affairs of a permanent rehabilitation centre for the victims of aerial spray of organochlorine insecticide and acaricide for cashew crops.

The dDCeputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said an NGO will be entrusted the responsibility to run a centre to take care of victims belonging to different age groups, besides the family members themselves roped in to run its administration.

Promising to provide necessary help and funds from the government, Mr Ibrahim said the victims and their families “will be helped to take care of the future care of the endosulfan cases.” The DC has been convening meeting of all developmental departments to discuss and take decision quickly, of late.

The saga of endosulfin victims and their plight came to notice when social activist Peer Mohammed brought to limelight the recent case of the death of Sunanda Poojary, whose children are also endosulfan victims.
