First-time director Neeraj Ghaywan’s much acclaimed movie ‘Masaan’ is all set for release on Friday, July 24 in more than 20 cities in India. The film ‘Masaan’ was showcased at the 68th Cannes Film Festival on May 19 and it received a 5-minute long standing ovation at the end.
Neeraj Ghaywan’s directorial debut ‘Masaan’ which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and has won two awards, FIPRESCI, International Jury of Film Critics prize, and Promising Future prize in the UN Certain Regard section.
Neeraj earlier worked with Anurag Kashyap on ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and he was the second unit director of ‘Ugly’.
Masaan’s opening scene starts with a young couple who shyly trying for the first time in a cheap hotel room, suddenly a group of angry muscular police break in and insults them. After brutal beating and threatening to ruin them, the boy takes his life in the bathroom and girl is sent to jail.
Richa Chadda and Sanjay Mishra in the film are playing the role of daughter-father. ‘Masaan’ means crematorium in Hindi, and the story revolves around four people from Varanasi(Benaras) in quest for morality. A low caste boy in hopeless love, a hapless father with fading mortality, who works as a pandit selling puja material at the ghats, a daughter ridden with guilt of a sexual encounter — it all ends in a tragedy.
