Box Office Collections of ‘Singham Returns’ Still Roar as ‘Kick’ Crosses Rs.230 crore, ‘Mardaani’ Begins at Rs.3 cr

Mardaani-PosterAs the weekend collections begin pouring in, “Mardaani”, Rani Mukerjee’s film released on Friday under YRF banner, collected about Rs.3 crore on its opening day, though more than Rs.5 crore was expected on Saturday, and it would end as another lacklustre film from the Yash Raj Films but with a strong message.

In fact, the film’s failure will be a sore point for many female-oriented films in the pipeline such as ‘Mary Kom’ by Priyanka Chopra. The contention being that repeated women-centric films like Queen, Dedh Ishqiya, Gulab Gang, Highway, show that Bollywood is still far from gender-neutral box office hits.

Despite a mega release of “Mardaani” in the big city multiplexes and single screens in the country with more than 500 screens, it came nowhere near the mega hits like Dhoom 3 or Singham Returns or Kick, with Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan roaring to big business days.

Rani Mukerjee’s venture, similar to Sridevi’s return with “English Vinglish”, gives hope to female leads who had paved the way for the success of Khans but moved into the oblivion later like Juhi Chawla.

Otherwise, leading the chart this weekend is still “Singham Returns” which has earned more than Rs. 112 crore in one week and entering the second week overshadowing the release of “Mardaani”. But not far behind still is Salamn Khan’s “Kick”, which has aggravated the collections so far to more than Rs.230.69 crore, according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, who chose it as the “ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER!” in his weekend tweet.

Even the film “Entertainment”, which is into its second week is making decent earnings still, showing an overall box office collections of about Rs.68.49 crore in Indian market. It remains to be seen whether “Mardaani” would reach Rs.50 crore figure to emerge as a decent attempt by the new bahu of YRF family.
