Another Campus Firing: 7 killed, 7 more Injured in Drive-by Shooting Near Univ of California (Timeline)

Friday evening, meant for weekend entertainment, turned tragic near the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara in the town of Isla Vista.

It was another incident of indiscriminate firing at pedestrians by a gunman in a black BMW speeding through the street and shooting in which at least seven people were killed, local media reported on Saturday.

California’s KEYT-TV said apart from 7 people killed, 7 more were injured in the shooting incident.

The gunman fired at sheriff’s deputies before crashing into a parked car and was later found dead of a gunshot wound in the car. The authorities have recovered a handgun, reports said.

Guns are banned at schools, universities and colleges in 38 American states.

Here is a timeline of recent shootings at American colleges since the Virginia Tech massacre in April 2007, when Seung-Hui Cho, a student, killed 32 people and injured another 15, in the country’s worst single act of gun violence.

October 2010 – Elizabeth City, North Carolina – A student fatally shot another student in the victim’s dorm room at Mid-Atlantic University. The University said the shooting stemmed from a conflict between them

September 2010 – Austin, Texas – A 19-year-old student fatally shot himself in the main library at the University of Texas with an AK-47 assault rifle.
He ran through parts of the campus and fired several shots into the air before entering the library and killing himself.
March 2010 – Columbus, Ohio – A disgruntled Ohio State University maintenance employee, who had recently been fired, opened fire in a campus facilities building, killing a manager and wounding another co-worker before he turned the gun on himself.
February 2010 – DeKalb, Illinois – One student was injured and another placed into police custody after a shooting on the campus of Northern Illinois University.
February 2010 – Huntsville, Alabama – A professor opened fire 50 minutes into at a Biological Sciences Department faculty meeting at the University of Alabama, killing three colleagues and wounding three others December 2009 – Woodbridge, Virginia — A 20-year-old student fired twice at his maths professor during class at Northern Virginia Community College. The shooter then put his gun down, left the classroom and was arrested.
September 2009 — Atlanta, Georgia – A gun was fired several times during a fight on the campus of Clark Atlanta University, fatally injuring a 19-year-old student from a neighbouring college who was walking by.
September 2009 – San Bruno, California – One person was shot during a fight in a parking lot at Skyline College.
August 2009 – Langston, Oklahoma – Four people were shot in a car park at Langston University.
July 2009 – Houston, Texas – Six people, including one student, were shot in a drive-by shooting at a community rally on the campus of Texas Southern University.
May 2009 – Cambridge, Massachusetts – A 21-year-old man died after being shot at a Harvard University dormitory during an attempted drug robbery.
April 2009 – Hampton, Virginia – An 18-year-old former student followed a pizza deliveryman into his old dormitory, and shot the deliveryman, a dorm monitor, and himself at Hampton University.
April 2009 – Dearborn, Michigan – A man shot and killed a female classmate and then himself at MacKenzie Fine Arts Center on the campus of Henry Ford Community College.
November 2008 – Savannah, Georgia – A 19-year-old student shot a fellow student twice after the two argued at Savannah State University October 2008 – Conway, Arkansas – Several men in a car drove up to a dormitory at the University of Central Arkansas and opened fire, killing two students and injuring a third person.
October 2008 – San Antonio, Texas – A librarian shot and killed a fellow librarian at Northeast Lakeview Community College library, where the two men worked.
July 2008 – Phoenix, Arizona – A former student shot three people in a computer lab at South Mountain Community College.
April 2008 – Boca Raton, Florida – During a fight at a campus party at Florida Atlantic University, a man fired two shots in a crowded room, one grazing the ear of a 21-year-old college student.
February 2008 – Little Rock, Arkansas – A student was shot on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
February 2008 – Jonesboro, Arkansas – A student was injured when a bullet ricocheted off a building and hit him in the leg on the campus of Arkansas State University.
February 2008 – DeKalb, Illinois – A former graduate student armed with several guns entered a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University and began shooting. He killed five students and wounded 16 before killing himself.
September 2007 – Dover, Delaware – A freshman student at Delaware State University shot and wounded two other students at a campus dining hall.
August 2007 – Newark, New Jersey – Three Delaware State University students were shot and killed in “execution style” by a 28-year-old and two 15-year-old boys. A fourth student was shot and stabbed.
April 2007 – Blacksburg, Virginia – A student killed 32 students and faculty, and wounded 15 more at Virginia Tech. He was armed with a Glock model 19 handgun and a Walther P22 handgun.
