42-ft Whale, Washed Ashore Died, Buried at Alibaug Shore

Blue Whale washed ashore the Alibaug beach on India’s wester coast due to a high tide has died of injuries despite efforts by fisheries officials to push it back into the waters.

The longest animal measuring 42 feet and weighing about 20 tonnes was washed ashore at the Revdanda sea shore, 20 km from Alibaug in Raigadh district of Maharashtra. When the locals informed, Deputy Collector, Alibaug region, Deepak Kshirsagar rushed to the spot and several officials and local fishermen tried to push the huge animal back into the water with JCB machines but in vain.

The JCB machines later digged the ground on the beach and buried the huge carcass. This is second time in less than 3 months that a whale was washed ashore from the Arabian Sea, that is home to about 20 types of whales. Two years ago, one dead whale washed ashore at Diveaghar in Rigadh district.
