300 minutes of physical activity a week saves you from breast cancer

However, a new research has shown that engagement by post-menopausal women in 300 minutes (5 hours) of physical activity can save them from both breast cancer risk and obesity, altogether.

The time duration suggested for the physical activity to reduce complete fat is more than the presently suggested duration of 150 minutes.

For the study, the research team from the Breast Cancer and Exercise Trial in Alberta recruited 400 post-menopausal women who were who were inactive, disease-free, non-smoker and non-users of exogenous hormones.

It was a 12-month, 2-armed and 2-center spontaneous dose-contrast test performed from June 2010 to June 2013.

The women were told not to change their normal diet.

The experiment showed that 300 minutes of exercise a week was “superior” to the presently suggested 150 minutes a week for cutting down total fat as well as other adiposity measures. The study stated that these results prove the more physical activity the better for curbing obesity as well as postmenopausal breast cancer.

The study stressed that a probable connection “between physical activity and post-menopausal breast cancer risk is supported by more than 100 epidemiologic studies,” including “strong biologic rationale supporting fat loss as an important (though not the only) mediator” of the connection.

The physical activities were mainly elliptical trainer, bicycling, running and walking – but any aerobic activity that accelerated the heart rate 65-75 percent of the heart rate reserve was allowed.

Apart from these, BMI, abdominal fat, waist perimeter and waist-to-hip ratio also reduced a great deal in the 300-minute routine than the 150-minute, as per the results. The research has been published online in the journal JAMA Oncology.

Other than this study, a previous study by American Association for Cancer Research, in August 2014, also emphasized on the benefits of exercising for women after menopause in order to stop developing breast cancer risk.

Another earlier study that was published in May 2008 by Washington University School of Medicine stated that girls and women between the ages of 12 and 35 that engage in physical activity, regularly, are less likely to have breast cancer after they acquire menopause.
