Second generation Bollywood actors Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer ‘2 States’ grossed Rs.12.42 crore on its opening day Friday, April 18, 2014, the third highest box office collection in 2014 so far behind Salman Khan’s ‘Jai Ho’ and Arjun Kapoor’s previous film ‘Gunday’.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted: “#2States is SPECTACULAR in India. Fri Rs 12.42 cr nett [early estimates]. 3rd highest opener of 2014 after #JaiHo and #Gunday.”
Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel, the film ‘2 States’ echoe similar sentiments and charm in inter-state cultures, here Tamil and Punjabi cultures with extreme feelngs of opposites.
The film, highly promoted in India and in Dubai, coincided with the first leg of IPL 2014 matches being held in Dubai, UAE. But the success back home speaks the relative decline in cricket IPL craze in the country due to match fixing scandal that had hit the game last year.
Other characters played veterans like Revathy, Amrita Singh and Ronit Roy compensate the pitfalls in story picturisation and repetition of old themes. Instead of ‘Old wine in new generation’s Bottle’, the film has come at a time when the nation is seeking relaxation from high-profile elections and IPL 2014 series.
