Rajkumar Hirani, the director of top blockbusters “3 Idiots”, “Munnabhai” and “PK” was hospitalized with a broken jaw when a bike he was test-riding in the night met with accident. He was not wearing a helmet.

When Hirani’s employee who had purchased an Enfield bike offered Hirani to test-ride it, the director jumped on it without a helmet and fell off while taking a turn on the heavy riding machine and broke his jaw though he escaped any major injuries.

He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai at 3 am on Tuesday morning hours and was initially suspected to have suffered brain injury as there was bleeding from his ear. However, it was later diagnosed to have been due to a jaw fracture and chin gash.

“He fell on his chin and suffered a minor fracture on his jaw. He may not need a surgery,” said Dr Jalil Parker, who is attending on Hirani. Later reports said he was scheduled to undergo a surgery at 8 am, which was reportedly underway when this report was filed.

Hirani, 53, is curently working on actor Sanjay Dutt’s biopic and was working at a studio in Pali Hill, Bandra when he tried out his skills on a new Enfield.

Rajkumar Hirani, who opted for editing course with slim chances to get into directing course at Pune Film Institute, went on to become a director, that too the most-successful one with all his films creating box-office sensation starting from Munnabhai MBBS (2003), that broke all formulaic conventions in Bollywood. Made with a budget of Rs. 1 crore, it went on to gross Rs.2.5 crore those days.

His second film Lage Raho Munnabhai brought into focus new Gandhism under Munna Bhai’s notion of Gandhigiri and created not only box office record but also raised the standards for films in Bollywood.  It was his third film 3 Idiots starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Omi Vaidya, Parikshit Sahni and Boman Irani, that made him unbeaten and emerge as highly talented director in India.

While 3 Idiots became the first Bollywood film to earn Rs.300 crore, an unprecedented record, his next film ‘PK’ went on to raise the bar by earning Rs.500 crore in all.

Being one of the best editors too in the film industry, he was busy editing his next production venture, ‘Saala Khadoos’ when the accident took place. The film featuring R. Madhavan in the lead role is also being made simultaneously in Tamil under the title Irudhi Suttru. Hirani will present the Hindi version.

Now that he is undergoing surgery and needs 3 weeks to recover from his fracture, it may delay the post-production plans of the film ‘Saala Khadoos’,  scheduled for release on October 16.

Next year, Hirani is planning to make a biopic on Sanjay Dutt and has already roped in Ranbir Kapoor to play the lead role.
